Our Story

This project was borne out of sheer frustration at the statistics we record every year. 💔

I posted this on my personal Instagram account on 20 December 2022. It was the catalyst to creating the inaugural Walk4Women. By the time we walked ten (10) days later on 30 December, the number was 61.

It starts with consent.

The sense of entitlement, ownership, the exertion of power and control.

The undertones to lighten up, it’s just a joke, there’s no harm. To who? There’s no harm to who?

Why does a mirror of the behaviour seem so unforgiving?

Is it because it’s shown for what it is?

To have to view it without the shroud of charm masking reality?

The most dangerous time for a woman in a relationship is when she decides to leave. When she withdraws consent.

The most dangerous place for a woman to be is in her own home. Not on the streets after dark, not alone on the bus or train. It’s not about how many drinks she had, how she is dressed or who she danced with.

A woman is most at risk of being killed when she is in her own home with a man she knows.

Fact.

She drove me to it. ‘

She wouldn’t listen.

She wanted to leave.

She insulted me.

She laughed at me.

She wanted to take our children.

She had been out drinking.

She wanted a baby.

She wanted to get a job.

She had an affair.

So I killed her.

It starts with consent to have propriety over our own bodies, our own lives.

52 Australian women have been killed this year so far.

49 by men.

41 by men known to them, either friends, partners, husbands

52 women this year so far have woken up in the morning not knowing it would be the last time they would. And last year, and the year before that.

None gave consent.

Yesterday 52 became 54. Today women are being warned about meeting men from dating apps, to avoid being murdered. There are no headlines reminding men not to kill the women they meet online.

None.

I guarantee you that Dannielle Finlay-Jones did not give consent to be murdered. I also guarantee you that the man who murdered her didn’t ask her for it anyway.

It starts with consent and it needs to stop ending with death.

Enough is enough ❤️‍🔥💔🚫 . . . .
